Overview:

Checking students in and out just got a lot faster. General Check-In/Out checkpoints (Day School) now support Scanner verification, so students simply scan their ID card or pass at the kiosk instead of searching for their name. You can use a dedicated scanner connected to your iPad or the iPad's built-in camera, whichever suits your setup.

We've also extended Automated Attendance to read barcodes, so schools with barcoded student ID cards can use them for attendance check-in with no extra setup.

What's new

1. Scanner check-in for General Check-In/Out

When setting up a Day School checkpoint, you'll now see a Scanner option alongside Pin Code, with two scanner sources to choose from:

• External scanner: for RFID card readers and barcode scanners connected to your iPad (USB or Bluetooth). Students tap their RFID card or scan their ID at the reader. Best for high-traffic entrances where speed matters most.

• Device camera: no extra hardware needed. The kiosk uses the iPad's front camera to read QR codes and barcodes. Students just hold their student ID card or pass up to the camera.
  2. Barcode support for Automated Attendance

Automated Attendance kiosks previously scanned QR codes only. The camera now also reads all common barcode formats (Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, EAN, UPC, ITF, Codabar), so if your student ID cards have a barcode on them, students can check in with the card they already carry. The kiosk prompt now reads "Scan QR Code or Barcode To Check In."

How it works

1. A student walks up to the kiosk and scans, by tapping their RFID card on the reader, scanning their ID barcode, or holding their card or pass up to the camera.

2. Orah instantly matches the scan to the student and records their check-in or check-out.

3. The kiosk confirms with a success sound and a green flash showing the student's name, or an error tone with "Student not recognised" if there's no match, so issues are caught on the spot.
   There's a short pause between scans to prevent accidental double check-ins, and existing External scanner (RFID) checkpoints keep working exactly as before, with no reconfiguration needed.

Instructions:

General Check-In/Out (Scanner):

1. In Orah, go to School Management → Manage Checkpoints and create or edit a checkpoint with the Day School (General Check-In/Out) mode.

2. Under student verification, select Scanner.

3. Choose your Scanner source: External scanner or Device camera.

4. Choose which identifier should be used to verify students: Orah Reference ID, SIS ID, or Card UID (Card UID is typical for RFID cards; Reference ID or SIS ID for QR codes and barcodes).

5. Save, then open the checkpoint in the Orah Checkpoint app on your iPad. For the device camera, make sure the app has camera permission; for external scanners, connect your reader to the iPad and you're ready to go.
   Automated Attendance (barcodes):

Nothing to configure. If your Automated Attendance checkpoint uses camera scanning, barcodes now work automatically. Just make sure the barcode on your student ID cards encodes the same identifier as your QR code settings (Orah Reference ID or SIS ID).
