Schools can now designate specific contacts as Primary Contacts for a student, ensuring the most important contacts are always visible at the top of the student profile and clearly identified with a Primary badge.
This improvement gives administrators and staff clear visibility into which contacts should be reached first in an emergency or routine communication, without having to scroll through a full contact list to find the most relevant person. Primary contacts can be set manually via the Admin Console, imported via CSV, or synced automatically from supported SIS integrations.
Primary contact designation — administrators can mark one or more contacts as Primary via the Admin Console > Contacts list using a new Primary checkbox column.
Student Profile sorting — Primary contacts now appear at the top of the Contacts section on the Student Profile, making them immediately visible to staff.
Primary badge — a clear Primary badge is displayed alongside each flagged contact on the Student Profile, consistent with the styling of existing Invited and Connected badges.
CSV import support — the downloadable contact import template now includes a Primary column (e.g. Contact 1 Primary). Setting this to TRUE during import will mark the contact as Primary.
SIS sync support (Blackbaud) — contacts flagged as primary in Blackbaud are automatically synced and marked as Primary in Orah.
SIS sync support (Veracross) — administrators can configure which relationship types should be marked as Primary in Orah via the Veracross Contact Settings, with an optional Custody Only filter.
Manual override protection — contacts manually flagged as Primary via the Admin Console will not be overwritten by subsequent SIS syncs.
To set Primary contacts manually: navigate to Admin Console > Contacts and check the Primary checkbox for the relevant contacts. Changes save immediately.
For Veracross schools: configure primary contact rules at App Directory > Veracross > Contact Settings. Select the relationship types that should be marked as Primary and optionally enable the Custody Only filter before saving and triggering a sync.
For Blackbaud schools: no additional configuration required. Contacts provided as primary = true by Blackbaud will automatically be marked as Primary in Orah following the next sync.
